Gnome on startup

I am running E on SuSE.. I am using all of the RPMs from the SuSE website.. I cant get gnome to startup on startx.. I have tried startx gnome, and was told that this would also start the panel.. My .xinitrc consists of the enlightenment executable only.. That is all that is in that file.. How can I get the panel to startup on startx? Also the control center.. Half of it works, half of it doesnt.. Customizing gnome in any way by using the control center does not work.. I press the control center icon and the menu pops up in the small virtual window at the top, but then it disappears.. Anyone know how I might be able to fix these problems?
