Not what you asked, but could you not spawn another corner panel, and
stick your clock on that?

I have a bottom-right corner panel with my clock, ppp dialer and
cpu-usage applets on, and a left-hand corner panel with my pager,
quicklaunch bar and foot menu.

Works quite well, and I can still hide the clock when I *really* need
the space.
