I think that is what I was missing thanks.  I've commented enlightenment
out of the .Xclients file.  Unfortunately I haven't figured out how to
export my display to work, so I'll have to wait until later to find out
if it did the trick or not.  I have a feeling it will.

I also did rm -r .gnome, and that seems to have cleared up the problem
with all of the terminals opening.  After I did that, however, and I added
exec gnome-session to my .xinitrc it would start X, but no windowmanager
would start.  My feeling is that this is due to having GNOME set to use
wmaker, but having an .Xclients that told it to use enlightenment.
Because wmaker isn't in the .Xclients file it wouldn't start any
windowmanager.   Anyone want to explain how I could export my display so I
could try it at work?  I've heard you can use ssh to somehow handle the
traffic?  

Now another question is how do I get wmaker dock apps such as wmsysmon,
and wmmail to work?  They don't seem to work with --enable-single-icon.
