James, the SuSE installation instructions for GNOME mention that this
happens fairly commonly, and suggests deleting the .ICEauthority file in
your home directory. I experienced the same symptoms yesterday, deleted this
file, and GNOME started normally. I don't seem to have lost any of my
configuration, either. The file is automatically rebuilt when you re-start.
Anyone like to comment? Any danger in deleting this file???

Hi all,
Posting here may be a little off-topic, but who knows until someone tells
me what the problem is!
Basically, I used Gnome with E0.15.5 for quite a while, then moved over to
WindowMaker for about a month to get used to it. Now I'm back, but
Enlightenment now takes forever to startup/switch themes.
It used to take up to a minute to start up and a little less to switch
themes (I'm guessinng themes switching involves some sort of saving of
current window states, and reloading with a different theme?), but now E
takes between 3 and 5 minutes (haven't timed it) to start up and just as
much to switch themes.
I am a little mystified as to the cause. The hard disk chugs along
seemingly randomly - there's no hint that continuous reads or writes are
taking place as you'd expect in swapfile usage as a large image gets
loaded. The disk itself seems healthy, and I've tried different themes.
To give you some proportion of the time it takes, I just started E/GNOME
through startx, waited a bit, went downstairs and made a phone call, came
back up again, and had to wait a little longer before it finally popped
up.
Whatever it is, it's only affecting startup/restart, not normal usage.
Setup is: AMD K6-2 300Mhz, 64Mb RAM, 128Mb swapfile, RH6, all gnome
updates (compiled from source).
Any ideas - it's rather frustrating?
