gtcd- error accessing device

I am new to GNOME, and sorry stupidity,  and would like to drop using Xmcd to
play audiocd's in favour of gtcd, but I get:

Error accessing cdorm device.
Please check to make sure cdrom in kernel...and permission to  access....
Reason: Permission denied

I feel, but I might be wrong, none of the above applies to my system. 
Any clue?

I have gnome-media-1.0.1-2 on a RedHat 5.2( my /usr/doc/gnome-media-1.0.1/README
is empty, and niether the FAQ details much)
