AS the most problems mentioned here are not specific to GNOME
please let's stop the thread now!

The main work has to be done by distribution makers. We should
instead focuse on GnoRPM & its siblings and try to figure out,
if and how it would be possible to minimize user risks when
installing software.
Power users use cvs or tgz anyway, or at least get programs from
trusted sites. GnoRPM is targeted to SOHO & home users, who do not
know a lot about general unix security & cannot afford separate
system administrators.

My main point is, that installing simple programs (trivial task)
should not involve risk overwriting system programs with altered
versions. Upgrading system software is not trivial, so it
doesnt have to be simple.
