If you run the packaged versions (.deb or official .rpm) and a stable
window manager (i.e. E is relatively flaky, it's not "finished"), then it
works well. The tarballs work fine too, but you can easily introduce
instability by failing to remove all the remnants of past installations.
Also, removing old ~/.gnome and ~/.gnome_private dirs can help. Finally,
gnome-session is relatively unstable and if stability is your main goal
perhaps best avoided (see the thread that just went by).
