I hope I havn't missed the reply to this message, but I get the same kind
of thing, but from earlier source tarballs on a Linux i586 machine.

The only difference is that the following reasons are given for not being
able to load the png files:
Unable to connect to server port 35091
This generally means that the program could not talk to the esound server
panel: can't resolve symbol 'png_libpng_ver'
panel: can't resolve symbol 'png_set_sBIT'
panel: can't resolve symbol 'png_set_strip_16'
panel: can't resolve symbol 'png_set_filler'
...
panel: can't resolve symbol 'png_set_shift'

I am sure I must be approaching this wrong but I seem to be having an
incredible number of difficulties installing and compiling the source
tarballs, is this because most people are using CVS?
