Why does anoncvs suck?

This should be a FAQ.

The responses I've seen to this question are usually along the lines of
"grab the latest snapshots" but, well, they don't always work real well,
so I try to use CVS.  Besides, if anoncvs is so unreliable that people
really should just get the latest snapshot tarballs, why does anoncvs
exist?

I'm not trying to start a flame war, I'm just terribly frustrated at
trying to keep my sources up-to-date.
