Actually, I think you read too much into the question.  I believe Daniel 
was commenting that GNOME is being positioned by the 
media/community as a user friendly desktop environment for geek & 
non-geeks alike.  Having as a precondition that the user learn what 
buffered I/O is, ahem, problematic.
