Return of the black PNG's

I've just (yesterday and today) updated (from CVS) and recompiled from
glib on up GNOME for one of my machines (RedHat/i386, glibc-2.0.109,
libpng-1.0.3). I'm getting all the png graphics as black boxes again.

Imlib's TEST program seems to display things OK, so where would the
problem be? This problem seems to be both frequent and intermittant, it's
the second time I've gotten it, and I've seen complaints from others while
my system was working fine. Is there something in the design of gdk_imlib
or libgnomeui that makes it suceptible to problems here? I'd like to help
eradicate this one for good, if someone will point me in the right
direction to start.

On a probably unrelated note, running panel spews out dozens of the
following warning:

Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_request() called on child widget with widget equal
to widget->requisition. gtk_widget_set_usize() may not work properly.

I say probably unrelated, since ee (the other program I've tested) has the
same black box problem, but no warnings.
