.spec file status in tarballs

Hi folks!  Very seen I'm going to be starting a complete rebuild of
Gnome on a new system, and I have a question:

Are the spec files in the tarballs up to date?  Anyone have any
experience using these?  (I really like package management, yet I also 
want to compile everything myself.)
