Just to chime in as well, I'm getting exactly the same thing you
guys are getting if gnome-session is the last command in .xinitrc.
My .xinitrc currently contains
gnome-session &
/usr/enlightenment/bin/enlightenment & panel
which works ok.

I too have the same problem. Here's what happens on my trusty old
486DX2, RH5.2,XFree3.3.3, and trying both gnome .99.7 and .99.8 rpms
and
in my .Xclients file the statement, exec gnome-session
...............

pixmaps
(--) S3: Using 16 planes of 746x54 at (0,601) aligned 8 as font
cache

Unable to connect to server port 35091
This generally means that the program could not talk to the esound
server
Priority 00 : Starting Id = default0
Priority 00 : Cloning Id = default0
Priority 00 : Registering Id = (null)
ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 319, errno = 2
waiting for X server to shut down
........................
I too can sorta bring up gnome by putting into my .Xclients file,
panel
& and exec enlightenment.
Hope we can hear from the experts on this.
