redHat 4.2 and gnome

Hi, I'm thinking of installing gnome on RedHat 4.2 - is this possible
since the docs are written for 5.0 and above?

You see, I don't want to update glibc and some other important stuff
becasue I run the Poplog programming environment which is very picky
about what it needs to run.

I can't afford to lose the function of Poplog, but gnome looks great.

Any help would be appreciated since there seems to be no mention of
gnome and redhat 4.2 on the web..
