As far as I can remember, the "Default" script is:

#!/bin/sh
/usr/X11R6/bin/xv -root -quit /opt/gnome/etc/background.jpeg

in /opt/gnome/etc/gdm/Init/, with permissions rwxr-xr-x, owned by root.root.

Is that any help at all?
