Esd problem

I've installed gnome from the latest ftp sources, but I can't get things to
connect to esd. I'm using esound 0.2.7. Every time I run a gnome application it
comes up with:

    unable to connect to server at port 35091
    this probably means the it can't connect to the esound server

Or something pretty close to that.
I've tried setting $ESPEAKER and I've tried running esd -port ###.

Any ideas?
