In fact problem is NOT where and how keep generated thumbnails ! BOTH ee
and XV methods are not perfect: for XV method you need write access to
directory, with ee method I'll end up with 600 thumbnails for each image
(I have 600 users here :-) !! For single user sistem both methods more or
less apropriate, for multiuser system the only apropriate solution would
be "thumbnail-daemon" runned under special user but there are also some
problems with security, etc. In short: perfect solution is NOT trivial.
But what to do ? Simple: do EXTERNAL (for guash, gimp, gmc, ee, etc.)
library and do SOMETHING for now. Redo library later if current approach
turned out to be bad (in some situations: on single user machine
"thumbnail-daemon" will be overkill I think)...
P.S. BTW if this will be external library then in the future there are could
be added icons in executable files, or icons in metadata (for metadata-aware
filesystems), etc, etc...
