Gnome-libs install failure.

I need some help here.  Gnome-libs compiles flawlessly on my linux
box.  But when I try a 'make install' it dies an ugly death...

 /usr/bin/ginstall -c -m 644 ../././gnome-data/gnome.soundlist
/usr/local/etc/so
und/events/gnome.soundlist
 /usr/bin/ginstall -c -m 644 ../././gnome-data/gtk-events.soundlist
/usr/local/e

/bin/sh ../././mkinstalldirs /usr/local/var/games
chgrp games /usr/local/var/games && chmod g=rwXs /usr/local/var/games
chgrp: invalid group `games'

Please help... I don't know how it happens I just know it happens
consistently.
