building for different platforms with same source

Is there a consistant supported method for specifying the object
directory for all of the various gnome packages?  At one location, I am
up to 3 platforms now (Solaris 2.6, Sparc Linux, Corel Netwinder) and
would really like to be able to build multiple objects from the same
source base.

Ideas?
