I suggest ignoring the install script on the cd and just do the
following (the readme on ftp://ftp.jimpick.com/pub/mirrors/gnome)

GNOME 0.99.3 Release
---------------------

Grabs the RPMS for your arch (i386/alpha/sparc) as well as the RPMS from 
noarch/, then rpm -Uvh *
