Notice that there is a "default.session" file in <gnome
directory>/share.
It looks like
    0=sound-properties-capplet --init-session
    1=wmaker #i'm using windowmaker...
    ....
    8=panel
    ...

I think this lists all programms to launch while starting gnome-session.
You can edit it and change the window manager to suit your needs.
