problem

I am somewhat new to linux and trying to learn may way around. My problem
is that I tried to install GNOME on to my system and know kde or gnome will
not
work when I log into root. I running on pentium 2 system and have open
linux caldera 2.3. How do I make it so that I am able to switch between kde
and gnome. Otherwise make it so one of the programs X's work.
Any help would be appriciated
