GNOME Sound: Run-Level 5 (xdm) versus Run-Level 3

Hi, I just discovered that, if I start my system in run-level 5 (xdm),
my GNOME sound doesn't work. However, if I start my system in run-level
3, login, and run startx, my sound works! Why does sound not work in
run-level 5?
