background settings

I'm trying to set the background using control-center, but when i click
on Background no options appear on the right window, only the bottom
buttons. I got the gnome users guide and I've seen what it is supposed
to show, but it doesn't say much about problems with the configuration.
Does anyone know how to solve that?
