library path problem

hi
i have recently downloaded some gnome libs and
gnome core and apps on my slackware linux system.
i dont have root access so i use other directory 
than /usr as prefix , while the binaries i have
downloaded use /usr as prefix. so i get a "cant
load ... lib" error. 

is there any env. var. i can set to be able
to direct the path of the gnome libs. to the
gnome apps. ? (or i will have to compile the source?)
