  Ok, suggestion: use XHTML, the new evolution toward XML of HTML.
Goal are:
   - this is well formed XML, so parsable by an XML processor (like
     gnome-xml aka libxml)
   - this is still viewable in old HTML only browsers

It's not yet a W3C recomendation, but usable right now.
 So this IMHO is the perfect tool for the job,
