Accessing dot files/directories with GNOME editors?

   How do I access "hidden" files and directories (ie those whose names begin
with a dot) using gEdit and gnotepad+? The save/load dialog boxes don't seem to
allow access to these, at least on my two RH 6.0 machines. I've looked at the
documentation, but don't see anything useful on the subject.
