esound not found

When I tried to start Gnome I received the following message:
Unable to connect to server port 35091
Program could not talk to the esound server
GtkWARNING: cannot open display
I am running SuSE 6.1 and have checked that esound is loaded.
Can anyone enlighten me as to the cause and correction of this problem.
I am running Gnome on my Redhat box and like it much better than KDE.
