I think the contacts are actually contained in the ~/.gnome/GnomeICU file.
I've found that file go to 0k in the past and I've lost my history... when
I coppied that file from a backed up ~/.gnome directory I got it back.

PS
I think this behavior of the contact file dissapearing has been fixed by
the recent version.
