That's easier said than done. I dial up to a rather large university's
computation center, where they run hundreds if not thousands of servers, so
every time I log in I'm randomly assigned a hostname of the form -
dial*.ots.utexas.edu
If I understand your suggestion, I would have to put an entry in /etc/hosts
for each of the hundreds/thousands of possibilities.
