GNOME panels are slow to open

See title. I was told that this was because I did not use esd (hence the
"Can't connect to server port" errors.) But now I try using it with esd,
and the errors are indeed missing, but the panels still take 5-10 seconds
to appear. Non-GNOME apps load just fine. Is this something I can fix, or
is it a *ahem* feature?
