i had a similar problem when i added some applets and when i moved a window over
the panel, so i'm sure it's a panel thing. if yours won't reappear (mine
didn't) when you restart X and if it tells you there's already a panel running
when you run panel, you can fix it by removing either ~/.gnome/session. it'll
go back to the default panel. it's been happening so much to me that i backed
up the file.
