I just installed OSS here as they have a driver for the Aureal A3DVortec 1
card. I just made a couple of symlinks and OSS works fine here.
ln -sf /dev/dsp1 /dev/dsp
ln -sf /dev/audio1 /dev/audio
Also I run esd with the -as # option so that non esd applications can access
the sound devices.
