I install GNOME on my laptop on /gnome:
./configure --prefix=/gnome --disable-static
I install GNOME on my workstation on /opt/gnome
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome
I install GNOME on my Alpha on /da/share/gnome-install
./configure --prefix=/da/share/gnome-install
