Enter the same escape sequences you use in the Xresources file and get
termcap/terminfo to match these. (suggestion of Hans de Goede, see:

xterm ^? ^[[3~
gnome-terminal ^? ^H
I find this strange because the gnome-terminal help states that
gnome-terminal provides the same terminal emulation as an xterm!
So I was surprised that a solution for xterm would not work for
gnome-terminal.
(I did not expect it to work for Eterm as that is based on rxvt)
