I learned C (and found that it is also the first-year programming book
used at my university) from their other book, _C How to Program_. It
teaches the basics behind C and then has a few chapters toward the end
that talk about C++ extensions. I found it quite a bit more useful for
UNIX programming (since I prefer C over C++ anyway). The info on that is:
C How to Program (second edition)

(The cover is a dark blue as opposed to the beige on C++ How to Program. I
believe it has the same picture on the cover, but I don't recall)
