panel questions (new to gnome)

1. how do you make it so that the panel doesn't run the full width of the
screen?
2. is it possible to change the vertical size of the panel?  or rather,
the overall tile size to say, 64x64 so that tiles made for Wharf and Dock
can be used as the panel's background?
3. what is the best way to configure the panel?  is there a gui?  or is
editing some file a better approach?
