GnomeCanvas performance

The latest gnomecal version from CVS uses GnomeCanvas for some views. I
noticed that when viewing the month and year tabs (the ones using
GnomeCanvas) for the first time it takes around 2 or 3 seconds until the
page shows.
Is this a general canvas problem or just specific to gnomecal use? If the
first I think there is some serious problem with the Canvas, the monthly
view in gnomecal is quite simple.
