undefined symbol: default_principal_iovec

When I try to load panel , I get the following error message: panel:
error in loading shared libraries: undefined symbol:
default_principal_iovec

 Prior to this problem I was having difficulties with "missing" libs
which were corrected by doing symlinks to proper files ie.
libgdk-1.1.so.1 -> libgdk-1.1.so.2.0.0 (and same kind of procedure for
libglib-1.1, libgtk-1.1)

I'm running Debian 2.0 and I've installed the gnome packages with apt.

Being a newbie I've run out of ideas to correct the situation and would
be very thankful for any information.
