Are there any benifits to a 3d windowing system??

Can you tell me realistically why developing a 3d window system would be
beneficial?? How many programs that you use on an everyday basis would
benefit from a 3d gui?? 

3d has its place, but before you go off saying that it is the desktop
wave of the future "just because MS is doing it" give some reasons WHY
it would be a good thing and not just frilly bloat.
