Balsa install

I'm trying to install Balsa-0.4.5 onto my Redhat 5.1 system, but when
./configure checks for GTK-version>=1.1.1, it dies. I know I installed
GTK 1.1.2 from the RPMS on the GNOME ftp site. This is from config.log:

configure:1949: checking for GTK - version >= 1.1.1
configure:2048: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -I/usr/X11R6/include
-I/usr/lib/glib/include   conftest.c  -L/usr/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lgtk
-lgdk -rdynamic -lgmodule -lglib -ldl -lXi -lXext -lX11 -lm 1>&5

Thanks to anyone who can help,
