Menus and the menu editor

I've just upgraded to .30 via .deb packages, and am having some problems
with my menu's. Apparently gnome has taken to makeing the menu's from
everything in the /usr/share/apps directory. However, this directory
contains many items that I don't want in the directory (like a bunch of
stuff from when I've ran kde). When I run the menu editor and try to
delete the items, it tells me that I must be root to do this
(apparently, it is trying to delete the files/directories?).
Anyway, is there a way to configure gnome so that it won't pick up the
unwanted items in the menu w/o deleting them from the /usr/share/apps
directory?
I'm not sure if this is a problem from running kde or not. I switched
to kde a week or two ago, but switched back to e after kde kept freezing
up on me. Anyway, I still don't really want to have to delete those
kde files.
Thanks,
Chris
