You might want to try XGtk, which makes writing interfaces a LOT faster.

Basically, you write the widget hierarchy in XML and include in it
Perl scripts that are run in response to events. 

This would be easy to link as a front-end to C code. One of the major
benefits is that you don't need to recompile to just change the interface
a little bit.

I'm looking for people to help alpha-testing the system to help find
out what's good and what needs to be changed.

As my own tests for it, I'm writing a CD player (with several different
user interfaces) and an XML editor (currently it displays the tree 
hierarchy, no editing yet).

In any case, just take a peek at the examples in gnome-cvs directory
XGtk/examples. I'm planning to take screenshots at some point...
