You *could* set the LD_PRELOAD environment variable in
your X startup environment, and get the same effect as
using esddsp for all programs started from that X session.
The esddsp script is simply a clean way to start
non-esd-aware audio applications, and doesn't force *all*
your programs to use the rerouted open/close/ioctl calls.
Having the option in a separate script allows for greater
flexibility, IMHO.
