I have no background image and have the same problem.  It seems to be some
of the clearing changes that were checked in a bit ago according to the
ChangeLog.  I haven't had time to look into this yet but I hope somebody
does.

There are many other session management problems as well :).  

Just to let people know I am also seeing the gnome-pty-helper's don't die
problem.  I'll do an strace as soon as I can.  I am running kernel 2.0.36
from RH5.2 so I don't think it is a kernel problem.
