IMHO anything that should be regenerated shoud disappear from 
CVS ASAP.
I've found a lot of files that should be built, but are in CVS and/or not 
deleted by "make maintainer_clean" (they shoud be wiped even from 
a "make realclean".
If You want a list I can provide it, but to whom should I send?
