| When I build gnome-libs, I get devel-docs in html. I can't tell you exactly

The key word is "useful". I've been banging my head against this myself over
the past week: too many things aren't documented or aren't documented very
clearly yet. (Most of the documentation for Gtk+ is stubs, for instance.
Much GNOME documentation consists of function declarations with no details.)
I still haven't figured out how to use GtkStyle to set the text color on
a GtkButton with a GtkLabel (background color works --- for *one* color. The
others are ignored. ??) much less reduce the size of the button to only a
few pixels around the text.
I've figured out the *basics* of the GNOME-specific part by taking apart
gnome-standalone. But there are still unanswered questions there as well.
I hate using functions without knowing what they're doing... programming by
cut'n'paste is a good way to get in trouble when you don't know what you're
pasting:-)
