Hello -
Last night I wrote a little panel applet that will switch desktops using the XA_WIN_* hints proposed by Marko Macek on the GNOME list. Currently, this is probably just icewm 0.91. It's still got some work to go, but I does do what it is designed to do.
You can get it at http://freeweb.pdq.net/redline/gnome/wmpager_applet-0.0.tgz
Unpack into the applets directory of gnome-core.
