What sort of thing were you picturing?
I know of two possibilities available right now:
1. You can run a program on a remote machine and set DISPLAY to point
locally. This is a feature of X, not Gnome.
2. You can use MC to browse things like ftp archives.
If you were motivated you could write a new virtual filesystem that
worked by using rsh/ssh to the remote machine somehow. This would let
you manipulate files on any machine you have access to, even if you
don't have permisssion to make NFS mounts.
