FWIW I just started getting the same problem, and mine worked before. This
is if I start the applet from an xterm. localhost pings fine. If I "Add
Applet" I get a segfault (trace appended). If I try to launch an app, the
child segfaults (I don't know where, gdb isn't attached to it - there must
be a way to do that, need to read gdb docs...). However, I assume the
segfault is in the launching code since every app does it. The
session-saved applets show up OK when the panel starts. There also seems
to be a default black background now, if you clear your .gnome/panel and
start the panel, it's gray the first time, but if you run it again it's
black.
